A visit to Air Show 2008

Last Sunday afternoon on 24th February, my family and I went to the Singapore Airshow 2008. It was held at Changi Exhibition Centre. We took a free shuttle bus to our destination from the Pasir Ris MRT Interchange.

The centre was very huge and there were lots of people queuing to go in. By the time we managed to enter, the aerial display had already started. The Black Knights from Australia performed different kind of stunts and formation in the sky. The stunts that they performed were very dangerous and breathtaking. Some of these stunts involved very good co-ordination and teamwork from each pilot. The roars of the fighter planes were very deafening and the white smokes trailing behind them were used to form different shapes against the blue sky. Next, an F-16 flew past the spectators stand. It was the most advance and sophisticated jet fighter that the Singapore Air Force had bought. It could ascend vertically and flew upside down. The most interesting display that caught everyone’s attention was the flight of the Airbus A380. This is the first commercial plane that has a double-deck passenger seating arrangement. It was simply amazing and entertaining to see such a magnificent “bird” flying in the sky and all the spectators were applauding and whistling in appreciation.

When we made our way to the exhibition hall after the aerial display, it was already crammed with people. There were many booths manned by exhibitors from other countries displaying their products. Most of these booths showed models of commercial and military planes to attract interested buyers. I was intrigued by the “Golden Eagle” fighter plane because of its modern weaponries. From the datasheet, I learnt that it could fly to an altitude of 9000 feet and could take off in about 5 seconds. There was also an executive airliner model intended for business purpose. It had a cabin designed to pack in a car while other compartments have a built-in living room, bedroom, dining and meeting room. It was meant for the very rich who could afford to own or travel in one.

Outside the exhibition centre was the static displays. There were Singapore Armed Forces vehicles such as the Bionix armor infantry vehicle, the Apache attack helicopter which was used in the Iraqi war, the F16 fighter and other small commercial planes. Last but not least was the A380 which was also grounded for the spectators to marvel. I took a lot of photographs of the aeroplane for remembrance but unfortunately, there were only the views from the outside. We were not allowed to take a look at the interior of the plane

After spending about five hours at the Airshow, we felt tired and decided to go home. It was really an unforgettable experience for a first-timer like me to visit such an event and I looked forward to coming again next year.
